“Hadal Ahbek” was released in September 2020, written by Jordanian teenager Issam Alnajjar alongside Sara Ihab Ibrahim Shalabi, with production handled by Luay Hijazeen. The acoustic pop folk track, built around an instantly recognizable guitar riff and a catchy “ra-pa-pa-pa” hook, uses traditional Arabic sayings to describe an enduring, unconditional love. The official music video, released March 15, 2021, was shot in Jordan and starred Dana Ishaqat. Following the song’s success, Alnajjar became the first artist signed to Universal Arabic Music, a label co-founded by Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, manager of The Weeknd.
“Hadal Ahbek” became the first Arabic song to explode as a #1 global viral hit, propelled by a TikTok trend that influencers including David Dobrik, Addison Rae, and Caroline Carr helped amplify. The track topped Spotify’s Global Viral chart and Shazam’s Top 200 Global Chart, with its associated hashtag generating over 300 million results on TikTok and the song amassing more than 3 billion views across platforms. Its crossover success led to an English-language reimagining, “Turning Me Up (Hadal Ahbek),” featuring Loud Luxury and Ali Gatie, further extending the song’s reach into Western pop and dance markets.
