“I Know What You Want” was released on February 24, 2003 as the second single from Busta Rhymes’ sixth studio album It Ain’t Safe No More… (2002), recorded at Soundtrack Studios in New York City and produced by Rick Rock. The song features Mariah Carey — who joined the track after Rhymes originally planned a different male R&B vocalist — and verses from his Flipmode Squad: Spliff Star, Baby Sham, Rah Digga, and Rampage. The track was also included on Carey’s ninth studio album Charmbracelet and her 2003 remix album The Remixes.
The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 — Busta Rhymes’ highest chart position at the time — and spent 21 weeks in the top 40, ranking No. 17 on the Hot 100 year-end chart of 2003. It also reached No. 3 in Australia and the UK, and topped the charts in Hungary, Poland, and Romania. The track marked a significant commercial comeback for Mariah Carey following a difficult period in her career, and remains one of the defining R&B and hip-hop crossover collaborations of the early 2000s.
